Everything you need to know about SpotLab: from your first deck to printing, cutting and playing.
- Open the generator and pick a deck size. For ages 3+ we recommend the 13-card “Quick game”.
- Click “Ready-made sets” and choose, say, Animals. All symbols are filled in at once.
- Switch to the “Cards” tab to see the result. Shuffle any card you don’t like.
- Click “Print & export”, choose the card size and download the PDF.
- Print on card stock at actual size and cut out.
- Pick the deck size. The generator shows how many pictures you need (e.g. 13 or 31).
- Drag photos into the drop area or click it. iPhone photos (HEIC) work too.
- Click “Remove background” on photos. The AI model downloads the first time, then it is quick.
- Faces and photos with a background also look good with “Crop pictures to a circle”.
- Short of photos? Use “Use what I have” in the size menu, or fill the rest from a ready-made set.
- On the “Cards” tab, click the card you want to edit.
- Click a symbol and drag it elsewhere. Use the sliders to rotate and resize it.
- “Swap with another picture” swaps two pictures on every card at once, so the game still works.
- Undo any change with the Undo button or Ctrl+Z.
- Print the test card first and check that the line measures 5 cm.
- Print on 250–300 gsm paper, at actual size (100%).
- For backs, pick a design and “Separate sheet” (turn the paper by hand) or “Double-sided”.
- Cut round cards with a circle punch; a paper trimmer makes quick work of square cards.
Yes. Every deck size, background removal, PDF and SVG export is free and needs no sign-up. The site is supported by ads.
As many as the deck has cards: 7, 13, 21, 31, 57, 73 or 91. The classic 55-card deck needs 57 pictures. The generator always shows how many are still missing.
Pictures are dealt onto cards following a finite projective plane, a mathematical structure in which any two lines meet in exactly one point. Our guide explains it in detail.
The best-known games use 85 mm cards. For small children and less paper, 70 mm is enough; six 85 mm cards fit on an A4 sheet.
Fastest with a circle punch of the card’s diameter, or with scissors along the thin line. If you would rather not cut circles, choose square cards and use a trimmer.
No. Pictures, background removal and PDF creation all happen in your browser. Your draft is stored only in your browser.
No, it is saved in your browser as you work. To move it to another computer, save it as a .spotlab file from the Project menu.
Yes. On the Play online page you can play against the computer, against the clock or with a friend, with ready-made sets or your own deck.
Yes, for educational and personal use without limits. With your own pictures, make sure you have the rights to them.
